Remember the Caribbean? | February 2023 #Shorts
A look back at our February 2023 Caribbean escape, with memories, winter-getaway tips, and what we'd do again.
Some trips stay with you long after the tan fades. For us, February 2023 in the Caribbean is one of those. We recently came across this little clip and, just like that, we were back: warm air on our skin, turquoise water, and absolutely zero snow boots.
If you'd like to relive it with us, you can watch the short on YouTube.
Why February Is the Perfect Time to Run Away
If you live in Mississauga, you know what February means. The sky is the colour of dishwater, the slush is permanent, and the sun sets before you've finished lunch. By the time the second month of winter arrives, we're both ready to trade our parkas for sandals.
That's exactly why we booked this trip. We weren't chasing adventure for the sake of it. We wanted warmth, rest, good food, and time together without a to-do list. The Caribbean delivered all of it.
February is also a smart time to travel to the region. It's the heart of the dry season, so you get sunshine, lower humidity, and calm seas. The tradeoff is that it's peak season, so flights and resorts cost more, and you'll want to book early.
What We Remember Most
When we think back, it's not the big moments that come to mind first. It's the small ones.
The first step outside the airport. That wall of warm, salty air is something we'll never get tired of. After a Canadian winter, it feels like the world's biggest hug.
The water. Photos honestly don't do that colour justice. We spent hours just floating and doing absolutely nothing, which, as a couple who usually run on packed schedules, felt almost rebellious.
The food. Fresh fruit, grilled seafood, and plenty of spice. Amir will never turn down heat on a plate, and Samantha is always on the hunt for something fresh and bright that reminds her of home cooking. We found plenty of both. If you love eating your way through a destination, our Vietnam street food guide for first-timers shares the same mindset: eat where the locals eat, and be curious.
The slow mornings. No alarms. Coffee on the balcony. Deciding what to do based on how we felt, not what the itinerary said.
A Little Cultural Perspective
One thing we love about travelling as a Vietnamese and Punjabi couple is how differently we each notice things. Samantha pays attention to markets, flavours, and how families gather around meals. Amir tends to pick up on the music, the pace of life, and how people greet each other.
In the Caribbean, we both noticed how much life happens outdoors and together: long meals, music drifting from somewhere, and a relaxed warmth from the people we met. It reminded us of big family gatherings back home, where food, noise, and laughter all arrive at once. If you're curious about how our two cultures blend in our own lives, we wrote about what we've learned travelling as an interracial couple.
Our Tips for a Winter Caribbean Getaway
If this short has you daydreaming about your own escape, here's what we'd pass along.
- Book early. February is peak season. The earlier you lock in flights and accommodation, the better your options and prices.
- Pack light, but don't forget the essentials. Reef-safe sunscreen, a good hat, a light cover-up for evenings, and a waterproof pouch for your phone.
- Protect your skin. Coming from a Canadian winter, our skin was not ready. Start with SPF 50 and reapply often, even on cloudy days.
- Leave room in the plan. We've learned our best days are the unplanned ones. Choose one or two things you really want to do and let the rest happen.
- Check entry and health requirements. Rules change, so confirm passport validity and any entry requirements for your destination before you fly.
- Respect the place. Don't touch coral, take only photos, and tip generously for good service. Local communities rely on tourism, so spend with intention.

Why Looking Back Matters
We're a family of three now, and our travel looks different from what it did in 2023. Trips involve nap schedules, snack bags, and a lot more patience. We wouldn't trade it for anything, but watching this clip reminded us how important it is to document the moments while we're living them.
Short videos like this one are tiny time capsules. A few seconds of footage can bring back a whole week of feelings. If you have old travel clips sitting on your phone, go watch them tonight. You might be surprised at how much you've forgotten, and how happy it makes you to remember.
Until the Next Escape
The Caribbean in February 2023 gave us rest, sunshine, and a reminder of why we love exploring the world together. We're already dreaming about when we can go back, this time with a few more tiny footprints in the sand.
