Hey KhelaMeetsWorld fam!

We're so excited to share one of our absolute favourite summer adventures with you – a perfect day spent at the Toronto Islands with our little ones! If you've been following us for a while, you know that finding family-friendly outings is a huge part of our life now, and the Toronto Islands truly deliver. We recently uploaded a video documenting all the fun, and we just had to expand on it here!

(If you haven't seen it yet, make sure to watch our Toronto Islands video on YouTube!)

It was one of those gloriously sunny summer days that just begs you to be outdoors. We packed up our usual mountain of baby and toddler essentials (diapers, snacks, change of clothes, more snacks, a hat for everyone, even more snacks… you know the drill!), loaded everyone into the car, and headed downtown to the ferry terminal.

Now, a trip to the Toronto Islands starts with the ferry, and for a toddler, that’s an adventure in itself! Our little one was absolutely mesmerized by the boat ride. The wind in his hair, the shimmering water, and watching the Toronto skyline grow smaller as we pulled away – it was pure magic. For us, it’s always a moment to pause and appreciate the beauty of our city. There’s something so special about seeing the CN Tower and the urban sprawl from the water; it offers a fresh perspective.

Once we disembarked, the island air immediately felt different. It’s a complete escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, a green oasis right on our doorstep. We always head towards Centre Island, as it has the most to offer for families. Our first stop? You guessed it – the playground! The Centreville Amusement Park area has a fantastic playground that keeps our toddler fully entertained. Seeing his face light up as he tackled the slides and swung on the swings really makes all the effort of packing and planning worth it. We often reminisce about our own childhoods, running around playgrounds, and it’s truly a joy to see our children creating similar memories.

One of our non-negotiables for a Toronto Islands trip is always a picnic. There are so many beautiful spots to spread out a blanket and enjoy a meal al fresco. We usually keep it simple – sandwiches, fruit, veggie sticks, and plenty of water. It’s a relaxed way to refuel and just soak in the atmosphere. This time, we found a lovely shaded spot near the lake, providing a gentle breeze and a perfect view of the boats sailing by. These are the moments we cherish, the simple, unscripted family time where we can just be present with each other.

After our picnic, we took a leisurely stroll. The islands are so walkable, and even with a stroller and a toddler who insists on running ahead every five seconds, it’s a pleasant experience. We passed by the petting zoo (another toddler favourite!), watched some people cycling, and just enjoyed the lush greenery. It’s amazing how a place so close to the city can feel like a world away. We love exploring different parts of our home province, whether it's a day trip or an extended stay like our Trip to Blue Mountain, March 2021 | Vietnamese and Indian Couple, but sometimes the best adventures are right here in our own backyard.

One of our personal tips for visiting the Toronto Islands with little ones? Go early! Beat the crowds, especially during peak summer weekends. It makes navigating the ferry and finding a good spot significantly easier. Also, don't forget the sunscreen and hats – the sun can be surprisingly strong, especially out on the open water and unshaded areas. And perhaps pack a spare outfit for everyone, because you just never know when a splash from the lake or a misplaced ice cream cone will necessitate a quick change! It’s all part of the adventure, right?

As the afternoon wore on, we started making our way back to the ferry. The journey back is just as beautiful, watching the city skyline emerge, feeling tired but happy and full of wonderful memories. These family outings, especially with a baby and a toddler, require a bit more planning and a lot more patience, but the rewards are immeasurable. It’s about creating those foundational experiences for our children, showing them the world around them, and just enjoying each other’s company.

For us, being an interracial couple often means blending traditions and exploring new experiences together, and documenting these family moments is a big part of what KhelaMeetsWorld is all about. We've talked about our journey as an interracial couple many times, including in our post about Traveling as an Interracial Couple — What We've Learned, and sharing these adventures with our kids just adds another beautiful layer to our story. Each trip, whether it's across the globe or just across the lake, teaches us something new and brings us closer as a family.

We hope this post (and our video!) inspires you to explore your own local gems and create some beautiful family memories this summer. What are your favourite family-friendly spots in your city? Let us know in the comments below!

Happy travels (and parenting!), Samantha & Amir
