Hey KhelaMeetsWorld fam! If you’ve been following us for a while, you know we’re all about adventures, big and small. While we love our international escapades, like our amazing Swiss Trip Recap (seriously, Switzerland is magical!), sometimes the best adventures are right in our own backyard. Or, in this case, on a lovely local farm!

We just dropped a new video, "Farm Day with the Kids," and it’s packed with so much joy and genuine family fun. You can watch it right here: Farm Day with the Kids | Khela Meets World.

The idea for a farm day actually sparked during one of our typical Sunday morning brainstorming sessions over coffee. With the kids growing up so fast, we’re always looking for ways to create lasting memories and get them exploring outside. Living in Mississauga, it’s easy to get caught up in the city hustle, but we believe it’s so important to connect with nature and understand where our food comes from. Amir, being a total nature enthusiast, was all for it. And Samantha, always looking for an educational (and adorable!) outing, agreed immediately.

Our little ones were absolutely thrilled when we told them we were going to a farm. The excitement levels were off the charts, especially when we talked about seeing real-life animals. Honestly, seeing their faces light up is half the fun for us as parents! It reminds us of the pure wonder we felt as kids, a feeling we sometimes try to recapture even on our travels, whether it's exploring the streets of [Travel to New York City](/blog/travel-to-new york-city-khela-meets-world-poko) or the mountains of BC.

The farm we visited was just perfect for families. It wasn't too big, which meant we didn't feel overwhelmed, and it had a wonderful variety of activities. From the moment we pulled into the parking lot, the fresh, earthy smell was a welcome change from city air. The kids immediately spotted the barn and practically dragged us towards it, eager to meet all the creatures.

Their first stop, of course, was the petting zoo. We saw everything from fluffy sheep, mischievous goats (who tried to eat Amir’s shoelaces – classic!), and even some adorable alpacas. Our little Kai was particularly fascinated by the baby chicks, pointing and making happy gurgling noises. It was such a sweet moment, watching him gently try to touch their soft feathers. He's growing so fast, and every milestone feels like a celebration – much like when we shared the monumental news of Welcoming Our Son: Kai's Birth Story with all of you.

One of the highlights for all of us was picking our own fruits and vegetables. There’s something incredibly satisfying about plucking a ripe strawberry or a crisp green bean directly from the plant. It’s a completely different experience than buying them pre-packaged at the grocery store. We tried to explain to the kids the journey of their food, from the soil to their plate, and they seemed to grasp it, at least for a few minutes before running off to the next exciting thing! We even got a little competitive about who could find the biggest strawberry – totally our competitive nature coming out, which happens surprisingly often, even when we’re just doing a Toronto Photography Challenge!

Apart from the animals and the produce, there were also fun activities like a corn maze (which we got delightfully lost in for a bit!) and a playground. It was a day of non-stop laughter, running, and exploring. We even managed to snag some fresh-baked goods from the farm store – because what’s a farm visit without some delicious treats?

Our Top Tips for a Successful Farm Day with Kids:

  • Plan Ahead: Check the farm’s website for opening hours, activities offered, and any special events. Some farms have seasonal offerings like pumpkin patches or corn mazes.
  • Dress for Mess: Farms are inherently earthy and sometimes muddy. Wear old clothes and closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. And layers are always a good idea!
  • Pack Snacks and Water: While many farms have food vendors, it’s always good to have your own snacks and water bottles, especially with active little ones.
  • Sun Protection: Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are a must, even on cloudy days.
  • Hand Sanitizer: You’ll be touching animals and plants, so having hand sanitizer readily available is key before snacking or getting back in the car.
  • Embrace the Unplanned: Sometimes the best memories are made in the spontaneous moments – a child’s delight at a friendly chicken, or a messy encounter with a playful goat.

This farm day was such a wonderful reminder that you don't always need to travel far to find adventure and make beautiful family memories. It’s about being present, enjoying the simple things, and watching the world through your children’s eyes. We came home tired but with full hearts, bellies full of fresh produce, and minds buzzing with the day’s activities.

Let us know in the comments if you’ve ever had a memorable farm day with your family or if you have any local gems you love to visit!

Until next time, keep exploring and making memories!

Love, Samantha & Amir
