How Well Do We Know Each Other? | An Interracial VIETNAMESE and INDIAN Couple!

We've been together for years now, but traveling through Asia together has taught us that we're still discovering new things about each other every single day. When we decided to explore both Vietnam and India on this trip, we thought we knew what to expect – after all, these are our heritage countries, right?

Wrong.

Watching Amir navigate the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City while trying to order pho was absolutely hilarious. Meanwhile, Sam was completely overwhelmed by the sensory explosion that is a Delhi spice market. We realized that despite growing up with stories from our families, experiencing these places together as adults gave us entirely new perspectives on our own cultures.

In Hoi An, Sam's Vietnamese kicked in more than expected, and suddenly she was our unofficial translator. But in Amritsar, when Amir started conversing fluently in Punjabi with the locals at the Golden Temple, Sam looked at him like she was seeing him for the first time. These moments reminded us that we each carry pieces of our heritage that don't always surface in our day-to-day Toronto life.

The funny thing about being an interracial couple is that people often assume we're cultural ambassadors for each other. But traveling through Asia showed us we're really just two Canadians figuring things out together – sometimes getting lost in translation in our "own" countries, and sometimes surprising ourselves with how connected we felt to places we'd only heard about in family stories.
