Looking back at 2021, we realized just how much Amir's perspective on travel and life shifted during what felt like the longest year ever. While we were mostly grounded in Toronto, he used this time to really reflect on what meaningful travel looks like for us as an interracial couple.

His biggest realizations:

  • Slow travel wins every time - Instead of rushing through destinations, Amir learned to appreciate staying put and really getting to know a place. Even our weekend trips to small Ontario towns became more intentional.

  • Food is the universal language - Whether we were exploring Little India or trying Vietnamese pho spots Sam recommended, he discovered that sharing meals breaks down so many cultural barriers.

  • Document the ordinary moments - Some of his favorite photos from 2021 weren't from epic viewpoints, but from quiet mornings in our Toronto apartment or walks through our neighborhood during lockdown.

  • Research deeper stories - Amir started digging into the histories behind the places we visit, especially understanding how different communities have shaped the spaces we explore together.

  • Pack lighter, experience more - He finally embraced minimalist packing (with some nudging from Sam) and realized how freeing it feels to travel with just the essentials.

The best part? Watching him become more curious about cultural nuances and asking better questions when we meet people from different backgrounds. It's made our travels so much richer.

What was your biggest travel or life lesson from 2021? We'd love to hear how that year shaped your perspective too.
