We stumbled across this random University of Toronto pharmacy video the other day, and honestly, it got us thinking about something we never really considered before - how different healthcare and pharmacy systems can be when you're traveling abroad.

The video was showcasing U of T's pharmacy program, but what caught our attention was how they discussed international pharmaceutical standards. As a couple who loves to explore different countries, we've definitely had our fair share of pharmacy adventures! From Amir trying to explain his prescription needs in broken Spanish in Mexico, to Sam desperately searching for familiar allergy medication brands in rural Vietnam during our family visit.

Here's what we've learned from our travels:

  • Always bring a written list of your medications with generic names, not just brand names
  • Research pharmacy hours in your destination - some countries have very limited weekend hours
  • Keep medications in original packaging to avoid customs issues
  • Consider travel insurance that covers prescription refills abroad

The cultural differences can be fascinating too. In some places, pharmacists are incredibly knowledgeable and can help with minor health issues, while in others, you need a doctor's prescription for almost everything. Sam's family in Vietnam always goes to the pharmacist first before seeing a doctor, which was such an eye-opener for us coming from the Canadian healthcare system.

It's funny how a random university video can spark these kinds of travel memories and realizations. Have you ever had any interesting pharmacy experiences while traveling? We'd love to hear your stories!
