We fell head over heels for Portugal the moment we stepped off the plane in Lisbon. There's something magical about this country that immediately made us feel welcome – perhaps it's the warmth of the Portuguese people or the way the golden light dances across the colorful azulejo tiles that seem to tell stories on every street corner.

Lisbon quickly became our favorite European capital. The city's hills reminded us of San Francisco, but with a distinctly Portuguese soul. We spent hours wandering through Alfama's narrow cobblestone streets, getting delightfully lost while the sound of fado music drifted from tiny tavernas. The Tram 28 became our best friend for navigating the steep inclines – though we learned to board early in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds!

A short train ride brought us to Sintra, which honestly felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The Pena Palace's vibrant colors against the misty mountain backdrop had us snapping photos like tourists (which, let's be honest, we totally were). We packed comfortable walking shoes and layers – the weather in Sintra can be unpredictable, and there's quite a bit of uphill hiking involved.

Pro tip: Book your palace tickets online in advance, especially during peak season. We learned this the hard way on our first attempt!

As an interracial couple, we were struck by how naturally diverse and welcoming Portugal felt. From the mix of cultures in Lisbon's neighborhoods to the genuine curiosity and kindness of locals we met, we never felt out of place.

What's your favorite hidden gem in Portugal? We're already planning our return trip!
