Khela Meets World Moves Yet Again | Buying & Relocating with Renovations PART 1

Well, here we are again – another move! If you've been following our journey, you know we're practically professional nomads at this point. But this time feels different because we're not just moving; we're buying our first home together and diving headfirst into renovations.

As an interracial couple, house hunting brought some unexpected moments. We found ourselves navigating different cultural expectations about what makes a "good" home – Amir's Punjabi family emphasized practical things like kitchen space for big family gatherings, while Sam's Vietnamese family focused on feng shui and natural light. Somehow we managed to find a place that checks both boxes (and our own wishlist too!).

The buying process was honestly overwhelming. Between mortgage pre-approvals, home inspections, and bidding wars in Toronto's wild market, we felt like we were learning a new language. Add renovation planning on top of that? Exhausting doesn't even cover it.

We're documenting everything because we wish we'd had a resource like this when we started. From budgeting mistakes we've already made to the contractors who've become our new best friends, we want to share the real, messy truth about buying and renovating simultaneously.

Right now we're living surrounded by paint samples, floor plans, and way too many home improvement shows queued up on Netflix. Our current place looks like a hurricane hit it, but we're excited about creating a space that truly reflects both of our backgrounds and dreams.
