We were wandering through the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City when it happened – Sam's Vietnamese side completely took over, and honestly, it was amazing to witness.

One minute she was politely asking vendors for prices in broken Vietnamese, and the next, she was full-on haggling like she'd been doing it her whole life. The transformation was incredible! Suddenly, hand gestures became more animated, her voice got that perfect mix of firm but respectful, and she was switching between English and Vietnamese so seamlessly that even the locals were impressed.

The funniest part? She managed to get us three different food samples from a street vendor just by chatting about her family's recipe for bánh mì. Meanwhile, I'm standing there like the obvious tourist I am, taking notes on her negotiation tactics for future reference.

It's moments like these that remind us how travel can awaken parts of ourselves we didn't even know existed. For Sam, being in Vietnam wasn't just about visiting a new country – it was about reconnecting with her roots in a way that felt both foreign and familiar at the same time.

By the end of the day, she'd scored us discounts at two different markets, gotten insider tips on the best phở spots from three different aunties, and somehow convinced a taxi driver to take us on a mini city tour for half the original price.

Have you ever experienced that moment when travel brings out a side of yourself you forgot existed?
